The Bechdel Test

Via Cindy Huang (PBS), via the Associated Press (by way of the Guardian), comes a renewed interest in Alison Bechdel’s test for meaningful female presence in film and television, originally called simply, The Rule.

  1. Are there at least two female characters (with names) who…
  2. Talk to each other about…
  3. Something other than a man

So.  Thinking about the movies that you watch…

Do they pass the test?

A probably important hint that needs to be dropped: The test is [arguably] more effective as a thought experiment, or a conversation starter, rather than say an actual criterion for assessing the watch-worthiness of a given film.
