On the Maturity of Maturity

I have often wondered if there is a point at which a person reaches, during their lifetime, peak maturity, after which they continue to simply age.  If I speculate further my guess is the level (and probably the rate as well) varies somewhat dramatically from person to person such that you have older persons with immature minds and occasionally younger persons with far more depth (not to be confused with intelligence or acquired knowledge).  Which begs another question that is:  What is likely the emotional age of the average person?  If one reaches a point at which you’re just… getting older, then what is this curious thing we refer to as “maturity” and, for that matter, can it even be measured?

Is it a state of being?  Or something more like a series of conscious choices lived out moment by moment…?  Can it be lost?
